TEMPORARY WORKS & WORKING PLATFORM DESIGN
GT Geotechnical designs working platforms that give heavy plant a safe, stable base to operate from. Piling rigs, mobile and crawler cranes, and other heavy tracked plant can apply significant loads to the ground, often beyond what the existing subgrade can support. We assess site conditions, calculate the required allowable bearing pressures and design cost-effective platforms that keep your plant safe and your project moving.
Piling Rig Working Platforms
Piling rigs apply high, concentrated track loads that change throughout operations, particularly during rig movement, mast raising and extraction. GT Geotechnical designs piling platforms in line with recognised industry guidance, including BRE 470. We consider rig loading cases, subgrade strength and groundwater conditions to determine the platform thickness and material specification needed for safe operation.
Crane Pads and Outrigger Bearing Assessments
Crane lifts concentrate large loads through outrigger pads or crawler tracks. We assess the bearing capacity of the ground beneath crane setup locations and design crane pads, outrigger mats and localised ground improvement to make sure lifts can proceed safely. Our assessments give crane operators and lift planners the bearing pressure information they need for lift studies.
Ground Improvement and Geogrid-Reinforced Platforms
Where existing subgrade conditions are poor, such as soft clays, fill or high groundwater, we design ground improvement solutions to reach the required bearing capacity. Including geogrids and geotextiles in the design can significantly reduce the gravel thickness required. That lowers material, haulage and placement costs without compromising performance.
Gravel Thickness and Working Pad Design
Before plant mobilises, we can verify that the platform has been built to the design intent. Our verification services include subgrade inspection, proof rolling observation, Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) testing and plate load testing where required. On completion, we can issue a working platform certificate signed by a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland (RPEQ), giving principal contractors and plant operators documented confidence before work begins.

Proof Rolling and Platform Verification
We understand that working platforms often sit on the critical path. GT Geotechnical can turn around working platform designs quickly on a job-by-job basis, often using existing site investigation data. Where data is limited, we can mobilise quickly for targeted testing. Our streamlined process keeps your program on track.
